Smoke and Mirrors is the incredible, true story of the man who fooled an entire country.

It is a story about scam artists and impostors inspired by true events and one of the most intriguing characters of the last decades. Francisco Paesa has been a businessman, a Swiss banker, international arms dealer, playboy, gigolo, diplomat, thief and secret agent: a spy. Having been betrayed by the Spanish Government, Paesa is forced to leave the country.

Years later, when he returns, everything has changed: he is bankrupt, his past reputation as a swindler and con-man means he is incapable of setting up another business and his relationship with Gloria, his wife of 15 years, is about to come to an end. In these circumstances, he receives a visit from Luis Roldan, the powerful former Commissioner of the Spanish National Police, who offers Paesa one million dollars if he helps him to safeguard twelve million pesetas embezzled from the public budget Roldan used to control. This becomes an ideal situation for Paesa’s acute mind to plan revenge for the government’s past actions and improve his finances by betraying his client. With the help of Jesus Camoes, his inseparable partner, they will orchestrate an intricate and brilliant operation worthy of the best illusionist.
