In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers.
What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
“Midnight Special” stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), Joel Edgerton (“The Great Gatsby,” “Zero Dark Thirty”), Kirsten Dunst (“Melancholia,” the “Spider-Man” movies), Adam Driver (“Inside Llewyn Davis,” HBO’s “Girls”), Jaeden Lieberher (“St. Vincent de Van Nuys”) and Oscar nominee Sam Shepard (“The Right Stuff”). Rounding out the main cast are Bill Camp (“12 Years a Slave,” “Lincoln”), Scott Haze (“Child of God,” “As I Lay Dying”) and Paul Sparks (“HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” “Mud”).
Jeff Nichols (“Mud,” “Take Shelter”) directs from his own screenplay.
Sarah Green (“Mud,” “The Tree of Life”) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (“Insidious: Chapter 2,” “Sinister”), who previously collaborated with Nichols on his critically acclaimed thriller “Take Shelter” are producing the film, with Glen Basner (“Mud”), Hans Graffunder (“Somebody Up There Likes Me”), and Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (“Take Shelter”) serving as executive producers.
Also reuniting with Nichols behind the scenes is director of photography Adam Stone (“Mud,” “Take Shelter”), production designer Chad Keith (“Take Shelter”) and editor Julie Monroe (“Mud”). David Wingo (“Mud,” “Take Shelter”) is composing the score.
