Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, Malcolm McDowell and Ben McKenzie star in this romantic comedy about love, family and the power of a good Mexican lawyer.
By day, Richard Haig (Brosnan) is a successful and passionate professor of 18th century romantic poetry at renowned Trinity College in Cambridge. By night, Richard indulges his own romantic fantasies with a steady stream of beautiful undergraduates, who are more than happy to quote Byron for him and take off their clothes. Richard learned how to be a proper rogue from his father, Gordon (Malcolm MacDowell), a former English professor and a world-class swinger in his day, who still believes in free love. But Richard’s looking for something more.
So when Kate (Jessica Alba), Richard’s tanned, athletic, 25-year-old American girlfriend tells him that she is pregnant, Richard is thrilled at the prospect of becoming a father. The only problem is that he’s not in love with Kate. He’s in love with her sister, Olivia (Salma Hayek). He fell in love with her the night she broke her shoe and he saw her drinking that big martini at the Savoy Hotel bar.
Fatherhood takes precedent, and Richard and Kate move to Malibu to raise their son. The first few years are idyllic and Richard devotes himself to raising Jake. But when Kate falls in love with a younger man, Brian (Ben McKenzie), who moves into the house, Richard is worried that he doesn’t have his green card yet and could lose Jake. He convinces Kate to let him stay in the guest house until the papers are final, and begins the complicated immigration process. When Olivia arrives for a visit, Richard is distracted, and a mistaken DWI puts his application in serious jeopardy.
Richard hires Ernesto, an immigration lawyer, to help clear his name. The humorless immigration officials are not impressed, and for the first time in his life Richard realizes that because of his own actions, he may lose everything that is important to him. Not only Jake and Olivia, but Kate and Brian, too, have become part of his extended family. He needs them as much as they need him. But it may be out of his control. Unexpectedly, it is Gordon who convinces Richard not to give up hope and to do whatever it takes to keep his family together.
